Fireworks vs Illustrator: Need both? - justinOrel - 01-12-2011 10:46 AM

Do you think it's necessary to learn both Fireworks and Illustrator?

For example I am strictly a web guy. No interest whatsoever in
doing print work.
To the extent that I ever need to use a Vector program (usually just
for buttons and such, I'm not a graphic artist) I like to use Fireworks.
Don't really feel much need to embark on the Illustrator learning curve.

Is it really necessary for web designers to learn Illustrator as well?

The Photoshop, Fireworks Illustrators are the product of the Adobe having similar type of functionality. If you are using one, you can easily use the others also.As you are basically form the web designing field. So, these are not much useful. They are very important tools for the graphic design filed. So, there is no need to give extra time for them.

Used Fireworks back in the day of table-hell & Freehand since that's what was used where I worked. Switched to Illustrator and much prefer it, especially now with the align to pixel grid feature in CS5 (no blurry edges!).

Never done print design.

You know the answer, it would be better to learn illustrator - you just want someone to say 'you'll be fine without it' but deep in your soul you know that really, you should learn it
