A firewall is software or hardware that checks information coming from the Internet or a network, and then either blocks it or allows it to pass through to your computer, depending on your firewall settings. Even if you think there's nothing on your computer that would interest anyone, a worm could completely disable your computer, or someone could use your computer to help spread worms or viruses to other computers without your knowledge.

Assuming your web-host has already set-up necessary security measures to protect your website, I would suggest also installing a firewall on your computer. Installing a firewall on your computer will help prevent hackers from accessing any login data you might have stored on your computer.

Just out of curiosity, who are you currently hosted with? are you hosted in a shared or dedicated environment?

If you are in fact a client, you do not have rights to install programs. You can do some of the following to prevent any problems.

- Keep strong passwords
- Update software to latest stable versions
- Scan directory every once in a while
